How to assess the manufacturing feasibility of your product idea
Before you start production, you need to ensure your product can be built reliably, safely, and at a cost that allows your business to thrive.
To assess if your product is feasible, you must confirm that the materials are accessible, the production process is repeatable, and the final unit cost allows for a healthy profit margin. Before you spend a penny on large-scale production, you need to prove that your idea can transition from a one-off concept into a manufactured reality without breaking the bank or requiring impossible technology.
1. Material Availability and Sustainability
Start by looking at what your product is made of. It is easy to design something beautiful on paper, but if it requires a rare alloy or a specific type of recycled plastic that is only available from one supplier in another country, you face a massive risk. Consider the following:
- Sourcing: Can you find these materials reliably within the UK? If you have to import, factor in shipping times and customs duties.
- Consistency: Are the materials uniform? If you are using natural materials like wood or leather, how much "waste" will you have to account for due to natural imperfections?
- Cost Volatility: Do the prices of these raw materials fluctuate? For example, the cost of steel or certain fabrics can change quickly, which could squeeze your profits.
2. Complexity and Part Count

3. Skills and Production Methods
You need to decide how the product will actually be made. This is often a choice between manual craft and automated manufacturing.
If you are making the products yourself, do you have the necessary skills, or is the learning curve too steep? If you plan to outsource to a factory, is your design compatible with their machinery? For example, if your product requires injection moulding, you will need to invest in expensive "tooling" (moulds) upfront. If it's CNC machined, the cost per unit might be higher, but the initial setup cost is lower.
4. The "Sanity Check" Table

When assessing feasibility, check if your chosen materials or production methods will make it harder or easier to pass safety tests.
