How to calibrate your monitor for accurate colour editing

Ensuring your screen displays colours correctly is the only way to guarantee that your edits look professional on every device and in every print.

To produce professional photography, you must use a hardware calibration tool to create a custom colour profile for your monitor. This prevents the common issue where an image looks perfect on your screen but appears too dark, too warm, or strangely tinted when viewed by a client or sent to a professional printing lab. The bottom line is that you cannot trust an uncalibrated monitor for professional work.

Why Calibration Matters

Most monitors are set by the manufacturer to look "appealing" rather than "accurate." They are often too bright and lean towards a cooler (blue) tint. If you edit a photo on a screen that is too blue, you will naturally add more yellow to compensate. When that photo is printed, it will look excessively yellow because the original blue tint was just a lie told by your monitor. Calibration fixes this by standardising your screen’s output.

How to Complete the Calibration Process

Calibration requires a piece of hardware called a colorimeter (such as a Datacolor Spyder or Calibrite Display Pro) and its accompanying software. Follow these steps for the best results:

  1. Stabilise your lighting: Try to work in a room with consistent, dim lighting. Avoid placing your monitor directly opposite a window, as changing sunlight will affect how you see the screen.
  2. Warm up the monitor: Switch your computer on at least 30 minutes before calibrating. This allows the monitor's backlight to reach a stable operating temperature and brightness.
  3. Clean the screen: Use a microfibre cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. The sensor must sit perfectly flat against the glass to get an accurate reading.
  4. Run the software: Plug your colorimeter into a USB port (directly into the computer, rather than a hub). Launch the software and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be asked to hang the device over the monitor, usually supported by a counterweight.
  5. Set your targets: For most UK-based photography work, aim for a White Point (Colour Temperature) of 6500K (D65) and a Gamma of 2.2. If your prints consistently come out darker than they look on screen, you may need to lower your brightness setting (Luminance) during this stage.
  6. Save the profile: Once the software has cycled through its colour flashes, it will generate an ICC profile. Give it a recognisable name (e.g., "Monitor_Jan_2024") and set it as your system default.

Best Practices for Colour Accuracy

Monitor performance drifts over time as the hardware ages. To maintain professional standards, you should recalibrate your screen at least once a month. Most calibration software includes a reminder feature to help you stay on track.
