How to create a profile of your ideal audience member

Defining your ideal follower ensures your content hits the mark and builds a loyal, engaged community.

To build a successful content-based business, you must stop trying to appeal to everyone and start speaking to one specific person: your ideal audience member. Creating a detailed "avatar" or persona allows you to tailor your tone, choose the right topics, and show up exactly where your future fans already spend their time, ensuring your content feels like it was made just for them.

Why you need an audience profile

In the world of content creation, if you try to talk to everyone, you end up heard by no one. A well-defined profile acts as a North Star for your business. It helps you decide which jokes to tell, which problems to solve, and even what time of day to post. Instead of guessing what might work, you can ask yourself: "Would my avatar, 'Solar Panel Sam', find this useful?"

Step 1: Define the basics (Demographics)

Start by sketching out the "hard facts" about your ideal follower. Since you are building a UK-based business, consider how their location or British cultural context might influence them. Ask yourself:

  • Age: Are they a Gen Z student, a mid-career professional, or a retiree?
  • Location: Do they live in a busy UK city like Manchester, or are they based in the rural Highlands?
  • Occupation and Income: What do they do for a living, and how much "disposable income" do they have to spend on hobbies or products you might recommend?

Step 2: Dive into their mindset (Psychographics)

This is where the magic happens. You need to understand what makes them tick. Focus on their motivations and pain points:

  • Interests: What do they do on a rainy Sunday afternoon? What are their passions?
  • Pain Points: What keeps them awake at night? What problem are they desperately trying to solve?
  • Goals: What are they aspiring to achieve? Do they want to learn a new skill, be entertained after a long shift, or feel part of a community?

Step 3: Map their online habits

You need to know where your avatar "hangs out" digitally so you don't waste energy on the wrong platforms. Consider:

  • Preferred Platforms: Are they scrolling through TikTok during their commute, or reading long-form newsletters on Substack during their lunch break?
  • Content Consumption: Do they prefer 30-second snappy tips, or 2-hour deep-dive podcasts?
  • Engagement Style: Are they "lurkers" who watch quietly, or do they love to debate in the comments section?

Step 4: Create the "Avatar" document

Give your ideal audience member a name and a face (you can even use a stock photo). Write a short biography of their life. For example:

"Eco-Conscious Emma is a 32-year-old marketing manager living in Bristol. She’s overwhelmed by 'greenwashing' and wants practical, budget-friendly ways to make her flat more sustainable. She uses Instagram for inspiration but listens to podcasts while walking her dog to get in-depth advice."

Tips for success

  • Be specific: Don’t say your audience is "women aged 20-60." That’s a demographic, not a person. Narrow it down.
  • Look at the "Why": Focus more on why they seek information than just what they seek.
  • Evolve: Your avatar isn't set in stone. As your business grows, you might find your real audience is slightly different from your first draft—and that's okay!
