How to display the health and safety law poster
Meeting your legal duty to inform employees about health and safety law is a simple but essential task.
What you need to do
You are legally required to inform your employees about their rights and responsibilities regarding health and safety. The simplest way to do this is to buy and display the official Health and Safety Executive (HSE) law poster in a prominent place where all staff can see it. If displaying a poster isn't practical, you must provide every single worker with the equivalent HSE-approved leaflet.
Poster vs. Leaflet: Which is right for you?
Choosing between the two options depends on your business setup:
- The Poster: This is a one-off purchase. You display it in a shared, visible location like a staff room, kitchen, or main office. This is generally the easiest option for businesses with a physical premises.
- The Leaflet: You must give a copy to each employee personally. You will also need a reliable process to ensure every new starter receives one as soon as they join. This option is often better for businesses with a remote or mobile workforce.
Where to get the poster and display it
You can purchase the official poster or leaflets directly from the HSE Books website. Once it arrives, put it up straight away. A 'prominent position' simply means somewhere your staff will see it often as part of their normal working day. Avoid placing it in a location that is not regularly used by everyone.
Top Tip: If you have a mix of office-based and remote workers, the most thorough approach is to display the poster on-site and email a digital copy of the leaflet to your remote staff during their induction.
