How to display your food hygiene rating

Once your food hygiene inspection is complete, you will be awarded a rating from 0 to 5. You are legally required to display the sticker showing this rating in a prominent place where customers can easily see it, such as your front door or window. Failing to do so can result in a fine, but more importantly, it shows customers that you are transparent and committed to high standards.

What happens after the inspection?

Your local council's Environmental Health Officer will inform you of your rating. Shortly after, you will receive a letter confirming the decision and your official sticker in the post. Your rating will also be published on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website, where it is visible to the public.

Where should you display the sticker?

The law requires the sticker to be placed in a 'conspicuous' place. Good examples include:

• The front door of your premises
• The main entrance or reception area
• A front-facing window at eye-level

The key is to make sure customers can see it before they decide to enter and purchase food. This is a legal requirement in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Scotland has a similar 'Pass' or 'Improvement Required' scheme, which must also be displayed.

Tip: If you believe your rating is unfair or doesn't reflect the standards you maintain, you have options. You can appeal the decision, submit a 'right to reply' to be published online alongside your rating, or request a re-visit once you have made the required improvements.
