Your team on the ground are your first line of defence. Train them to recognize the physical signs of an overloaded vehicle:

  • The "Squat": If the rear wheel arches are sitting very close to the tyres, the van is likely over its limit.
  • Handling Changes: Teach drivers to report if the steering feels "light" or if braking distances feel significantly longer than usual.
  • Strategic Loading: Ensure heavy items are placed over the axles, not all at the very back or one side, as uneven distribution can cause a vehicle to fail a roadside weight check even if the total weight is technically under the MAM.
Pro Tip: Use local weighbridges. If you are unsure about a load, find a local public weighbridge (often found at scrap yards or council sites). For a small fee (usually £10-£20), you can get a printed certificate of your exact weight. It is far cheaper than a DVSA fine.

Visual Indicators and Warning Signs

Consider installing on-board weighing sensors. These are aftermarket kits that alert the driver when the van is nearing its maximum capacity. If your budget doesn't allow for tech, ensure your "Vehicle Defect Book" includes a section for the driver to sign off that they have visually checked the load and the vehicle's ride height before departing every job.
