How to implement a regular facility cleaning schedule

A clear and consistent cleaning schedule is key to guest satisfaction and maintaining the highest standards of hygiene on your site.

To keep your guests happy and your facilities sparkling, you need to create and display a cleaning rota for all shared areas. This simple document, often just a checklist on a clipboard, shows guests you're serious about hygiene and ensures that crucial tasks are never missed, especially for high-traffic areas like toilets and showers.

What your rota should include

A good cleaning rota is clear, simple, and easy for anyone to follow. Make sure it contains columns for these four key things:

  • Facility & Task: Be specific. Instead of 'Clean Toilets', list out the individual jobs like 'Clean toilet bowl', 'Wipe toilet seat', 'Mop floor', and 'Restock toilet roll'.
  • Frequency: Note how often the task should be done (e.g., Twice daily, hourly during peak season).
  • Time & Date: A column to record when the check was completed.
  • Initials/Signature: A space for the cleaner to sign off, creating accountability and showing guests the task has been done.

Creating your schedule in 3 simple steps

  1. List your facilities: Walk around your site and list every single shared facility that needs regular cleaning. This includes toilets, showers, washing-up stations, laundry rooms, and any communal lounges or kitchens.
  2. Decide the frequency: For each area, decide how often it needs cleaning. Toilets and showers will likely need checking and cleaning at least twice a day during busy periods, while a laundry room might only need one deep clean per day. Be realistic about what you and your team can manage.
  3. Create and display the rota: Use a simple spreadsheet or word processor to create a checklist template. Print several copies, put them on clipboards, and hang them in a visible place within each facility. This transparency is incredibly reassuring for guests.
Top Tip: Don't forget to include a check of supplies on your rota. Running out of toilet paper or hand soap can be just as frustrating for a guest as a dirty facility. Build 'Restock...' into your checklist.

A well-managed cleaning schedule is a cornerstone of a professionally run site. It protects your reputation and is one of the most important factors in getting those glowing five-star reviews.
