Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) ensures your electrical staging inventory is safe for use, protecting your clients and your business from fire risks.

To ensure your home staging business remains safe and legally compliant, you must arrange for a competent person to perform Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) on all plug-in electrical items before they are placed in a client's property. This process identifies potential safety defects in items like floor lamps, table lights, and small kitchen appliances that could lead to fires or electrical shocks.

Why PAT testing is essential

In the UK, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that all electrical equipment provided in a work context (which includes inventory you rent to clients) must be maintained in a safe condition. If a faulty lamp from your inventory causes a fire in a client’s home, having a valid PAT record is your primary proof that you took reasonable steps to ensure the equipment was safe.

How to complete the testing

  1. Identify a competent person: You do not necessarily need a fully qualified electrician, but you do need someone with the right equipment and knowledge to conduct the tests. Many specialized PAT testing companies offer affordable rates for small businesses.
  2. Consolidate your inventory: To minimize costs, bring all your electrical items to one location, such as your storage unit, so the technician can test everything in one visit.
  3. The inspection process: The technician will perform a visual check for frayed wires or cracked plugs and then use a PAT testing device to check earth continuity and insulation.
  4. Label and log: Every item that passes will receive a green "Pass" sticker. Most importantly, ensure the technician provides you with a PAT Register—a document listing every item and its test result—to keep in your business records.

Tip: Establish a routine to have your inventory re-tested every 12 to 24 months. Frequent moving and transport can cause hidden damage to electrical components that a standard visual check might miss.
