How to obtain a vehicle MOT certificate

To legally operate your food truck, it must have a valid MOT certificate if it is over three years old. The MOT is a mandatory annual test that checks your vehicle's safety, roadworthiness, and exhaust emissions. It's a crucial step to ensure your business vehicle is safe for you, your employees, and the public.

How to book an MOT

You must use an approved MOT test centre, which you can identify by the blue sign with three white triangles. You can find a local, approved garage using the government's online service. It's wise to book your test in advance, as you can have it tested up to a month (minus a day) before your current certificate expires, allowing you to keep the same renewal date.

What the test covers

An MOT test isn't a full mechanical inspection of your vehicle, but it does cover the most important parts to ensure it's safe to be on the road. Key areas checked include:

• Exhaust, fuel, and emissions

After the test

If your vehicle passes, you'll receive a new MOT certificate, valid for one year. If it fails, you will be given a refusal certificate listing the dangerous or major faults. You cannot legally drive the vehicle until these issues are fixed and it passes a retest, except to take it to a garage for repairs or to a pre-arranged MOT appointment.
