How to register for the DBS Update Service

Keep your DBS certificate continuously up-to-date and save yourself the time and money of reapplying every year.

To keep your DBS certificate valid and avoid having to apply for a new one for future roles, you must register for the online DBS Update Service. This costs a small annual fee and must be done within 30 days of the 'date of issue' printed on your certificate. Registering allows potential clients or employers to check your DBS status instantly online, giving them immediate peace of mind and making you much more appealing to work with.

What is the DBS Update Service?

Think of the DBS Update Service as an official online subscription that keeps your Standard or Enhanced DBS certificate continuously up-to-date. Instead of your paper certificate becoming outdated, the online service confirms that the information on it is still current. As long as you're subscribed, anyone who needs to check your status (with your permission) can do so online in minutes, rather than waiting weeks for a new check to be processed.

Why should I register?

The main benefits are convenience, speed, and long-term cost savings. Here’s why it’s a smart move:

  • Save Money: Instead of paying for a brand new DBS check (which can cost £40 or more) every time you start with a new agency or for a new role, you pay one small annual subscription fee (around £13).
  • Save Time: It makes you more employable. You can be 'cleared' to work with children or vulnerable adults almost instantly, which is a huge advantage over someone who needs to wait for a new certificate to be issued.
  • It's Portable: You can use the same certificate for different roles, as long as they are in the same workforce (e.g., 'child workforce') and require the same level of check.

How to register for the service

The process is straightforward and only takes a few minutes. Follow these steps:

  1. Get your certificate number: You must have your new DBS certificate in hand. You cannot register without the unique certificate number printed on it.
  2. Go to the GOV.UK website: Search for "DBS Update Service" or go directly to the official government registration page. Do not use third-party sites.
  3. Enter your details: You will be asked to enter your DBS certificate number, your surname, and your date of birth exactly as they appear on the certificate.
  4. Pay the annual fee: Have a debit or credit card ready to make the payment for the first year's subscription.
  5. Confirm and save your ID: Once you've paid, your registration is complete. You will be given a unique ID number for the Update Service. Keep this number safe, as you will need to give it to employers or clients who need to check your status.
Don't miss the deadline! You have just 30 calendar days from the date of issue on your certificate to register. If you miss this window, you will have to apply for a whole new DBS check to be able to join the service.

Finally, remember to keep your original paper certificate in a safe place. The Update Service only confirms that the certificate is still current; it does not show the actual information contained on it. An employer will need to see the original certificate first before using the online service to check its status.
