How to update vehicle insurance for business use

Ensuring your vehicle has the correct class of use is vital to keep your policy valid while you travel between client properties.

To stay legally and financially protected, you must inform your car insurance provider that you are using your vehicle for work. Standard "Social, Domestic, and Pleasure" policies do not cover you for driving to multiple sites or meetings; if you have an accident while on a business trip without the correct cover, your insurer is highly likely to void your claim entirely.

Understanding Business Use Classes

When you contact your insurer, they will usually ask you to choose between different classes of business use. For a home stager, the following are most relevant:

  • Class 1: This covers the policyholder for driving between multiple places of work. It is perfect for visiting various client homes or meeting estate agents. It typically excludes commercial deliveries.
  • Class 2: This provides the same cover as Class 1 but extends it to include a named driver (such as a business partner or employee) on your policy.

How to update your policy

  1. Contact your current provider: You can often do this via your online portal, though a phone call is better to ensure you aren't miscategorised.
  2. Describe your activity: Explain that you are a self-employed home stager visiting different residential properties.
  3. Verify the premium: Adding Class 1 business use is often surprisingly cheap—sometimes even free—but it is a legal necessity.
  4. Confirm the document: Once the change is made, check your new Certificate of Insurance to ensure "Business Use" is explicitly listed.
Top Tip: If you are using a dedicated van to move large amounts of furniture, standard car business insurance won't cut it. You will likely need a specific Commercial Van policy instead.
