How to write compelling product descriptions

Well-crafted product descriptions can turn a casual browser into a confident buyer by clearly communicating value and answering key questions.

To write a product description that sells, you need to go beyond a simple list of features. Your main goal is to explain how your product solves a customer's problem or improves their life. A great description combines the key features with the real-world benefits for the customer, all written in your unique brand voice. Think of it as your silent salesperson, working 24/7 to persuade and inform.

Start with your ideal customer

Before you write a single word, picture your perfect customer. What are their needs and desires? What problems are they trying to solve? What kind of humour do they appreciate? Are they looking for technical specs or a lifestyle upgrade? Writing directly to this person makes your copy more personal and effective. For example, you'd describe a camera very differently to a professional photographer than you would to a parent wanting to capture family moments.

Translate features into benefits

This is the most important rule of product copywriting. A feature is a factual statement about your product, but a benefit is what that feature does for your customer. People buy based on benefits.

For example:
Feature: The backpack is made from waterproof nylon.
Benefit: Your laptop and books will stay bone-dry, even if you get caught in a downpour.

Always try to answer the customer's unspoken question: "What's in it for me?"

Make it easy to read

Most people scan online content rather than reading every word. Structure your descriptions to be easily digestible:

  • Use short, punchy paragraphs.
  • Use bullet points for key features, specifications, and dimensions.
  • Use bold text to highlight important information.
  • Include plenty of white space to avoid a wall of text.

Include all the necessary details

Answering questions before they are asked builds trust and reduces the chance of a product being returned. Make sure you include all the practical information a customer might need:

  • Materials: What is it made of? (e.g., 100% organic cotton, solid oak)
  • Dimensions: Provide clear measurements (e.g., 30cm x 45cm x 15cm).
  • Care Instructions: How should they look after it? (e.g., Machine wash cold, wipe clean with a damp cloth).
  • What's in the box: List everything the customer will receive.

Let your brand's personality shine

Your product descriptions are a perfect place to reinforce your brand's tone of voice. Are you playful and fun? Luxurious and sophisticated? Eco-conscious and serious? Use language that reflects this identity. This helps you connect with your target audience on an emotional level and stand out from competitors who just list boring facts.
